Abstract

This study aims to describe how ecological values that concern on the environment can be included in learning literature in schools. In the midst of issues of natural damage that are troubling the world, such as rising air temperatures, uncontrolled waste, air pollution, floods, etc., literature as a medium, that functions not only to entertain but also to educate, can be used to raise awareness among students at school by incorporating ecological values into literary learning. The application of these values can be seen through learning to read and write literary works with current natural conditions theme, about the beauty of nature if it is not damaged by humans, how humans protect the universe, and what are the consequences of the destruction of nature for human survival and its contents. Teachers can use learning media such as videos and pictures of natural damage at the beginning of the lesson as an effort to provide an understanding of the consequences of not protecting nature, then give the students examples of literary works that contain messages to protect nature, then ask the students to make literary works with environmental care values, then the editing is done before publication on students^ social media therefore the message can be conveyed to others. With the application of ecological values in learning literature in schools, it is hoped that it can provide ecological awareness to students in order to save the earth from damage

Abstract

Educating younger generation through films is not uncommon, but educating them through animated films that take a topic most people avoid to discuss about i.e., death, as their main theme is. Supported by terror management theory, the concept of memento mori, as well as cultural worldviews regarding death, particularly the Mexican^s Day of the Dead, Paganism and modern Western world, this paper will discuss how death, depicted in Disney-Pixar^s three original animated films, positively impacts character development, which automatically inspires a similar effect on their audience. After having an experience with death - in other words, having been educated by death - the main characters of Coco (2017), Onward (2020), and Soul (2020) become better characters, who realise that they need to maximise their limited time to be useful individuals in their own capacity and society, which puts the cycle for sustainability in motion. Further studies regarding the educational impacts of these three animated films are also suggested.

Abstract

Biopsychology is often considered as a challenging course for first-year Psychology students. Data from the BINUS Psychology Department in 2020 shows that learning outcomes in Biopsychology of first-year students have not been optimal. Therefore, intervention is needed to improve learning outcomes of students through self-regulated learning, especially in the online learning context. This study aims to find an overview of perception about Biology of students and the effectiveness of Differentiated Instruction (DI) implementation to improve self-regulated learning. Biology was chosen due to its relatedness to Biopsychology. Partial results from 216 first-year psychology students showed that most (92.12%) were familiar with Biology. Moreover, this study showed that most participants (77.77%) perceived Biology as an interesting but challenging subject to learn. Furthermore, from 216 participants, 36 participants completed the mental effort (ME) and judgement of learning (JOL) questionnaire (within five online sessions). Paired sample t-test analysis showed no significant difference in ME and JOL in online sessions before and during DI intervention, indicating that the implementation of our intervention did not lead to higher effort or confidence during learning. We speculated that a more elaborate DI intervention is needed to improve ME and JOL of first-year students, which lead to optimal learning.

Abstract

Learning style is one of the supporting indicators of success in learning. This condition is because the learning style attached to students becomes an innate characteristic that will affect learning achievement, one of which is Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). In elementary school, learning improvements to Higher Order Thinking Skills began to be noticed and applied. However, this is not something new, but the application of HOTS at the elementary school level has not been evenly distributed. Even in some areas, the exposure of HOTS can be a new thing- for example, in the Bengkayang region, West Kalimantan is a border area. The application of HOTS requires careful readiness, especially in the current pandemic where learning from home is implemented. In this case, teachers need to prepare HOTS-based learning instruments, media, and tools and get to know the characteristics of learners, so teachers can design an effective learning process and impact to improving HOTS. This research focuses on studying the effect of learning from home on HOTS in terms of learning styles. The type of research conducted is quantitative by examining the position of learning style against hots in students. The findings of the details are revealed in this article.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the relationship between teacher adjustment and teaching motivation during the online learning. This study used the quantitative methods with 83 high school teachers as respondents. Teacher Adjustment was measured using the Psychological Adjustment Scale (PAS) referring to Runyon and Harber^s theory which was then adapted to the research context. Teaching motivation was measured using The Work Task Motivation Scale for Teachers (WTMST) developed by Fernet et al. (2008). Based on the Spearman correlation analysis it revealed the value of r = 0.631 (p <0.05), this indicated that there is a significant positive relationship between teacher adjustment and teaching motivation. It therefore can be concluded that the high teacher adjustment will correlate with the high teacher^s teaching motivation, and the low teacher adjustment will correlate with the low teacher teaching motivation. The study recommends to provide sufficient help for teacher in increasing their teacher adjustment as it will correlate with their teaching motivation.

Abstract

The rapid development of information and communication technology from Industry 4.0 to Smart Society 5.0 brought drastic changes to society and to educational disciplines. While people are busy staying connected to the changing currents of the global community, teaching staff in various countries discuss how schools and teaching and learning processes can keep pace with the pace of technological development. The main objective of this research is to see if educational games in physical form have the same effectiveness as educational games in digital form in transmitting the knowledge of sign language. The study was carried out by directly observing learning activities with both types of games in 14 deaf students between 6 and 10 years old who came from an Extraordinary School (SLB) owned by the Santi Rama Foundation in Jakarta. The development of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) structure is used to determine the scale of student satisfaction with digital and physical educational games. The results of this study indicate that the elements of entertainment or elements of entertainment implemented in educational games are a key factor in determining whether students will actively participate in the learning process while playing. The participation of these students is directly related to the desired learning outcomes. Therefore, optimizing the subjective gaming experience is a very important part of the educational game design process to convey sign language knowledge.

Abstract

This empirical study examines the importance of dynamic capabilities, which is a research area, and develops according to the dynamic and rapidly changing business environment. This has attracted the attention of researchers and is an area that is being studied further to understand its implications for the budget hotel industry. This study aims to explore the dynamic capabilities approach from a resource-based view over the years and how the hospitality industry can survive in a dynamically changing environment. This research design uses applied research which is directed to solve specific problems at the time the research is conducted. This explanatory research activity is used to find and limit research problems so that they are applicable and researchable. The analysis used is to examine the structure of the equation model (SEM) by confirming 54 hotel organizations that have gone through the adjustment process in the Surakarta City area, Central Java. The author finds that dynamic capabilities have explanatory power affecting sustained competitive advantage. This requires the ability to provide timely service, use the right cost, ease of access, appropriate tariff variations, server proficiency, and service quality assurance. On the other hand, dynamic capabilities do not have a direct impact on sustainability performance (finance, profit, growth). In addition, dynamic capabilities indirectly affect sustainability performance (finance, profit, growth), which is better through sustained competitive advantage. It can be concluded that the budget type of hotel organization is looking for a strategy to improve organizational and individual capabilities, understand the environmental conditions of sustained competitive advantage that continue to change dynamically, to achieve sustainable performance.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the concept of face-to-face learning into virtual face-to-face. Learning from home requires students to study remotely. A new era of normality requires that learning continues. So that the combination of face-to-face and online learning methods becomes a consideration. This requires teachers to use digital-based learning media. This fact is also affected by the implementation of learning. Learning materials previously presented in manual form are required for digitization. Applications such as Google Clasroom, Google Drive, and Goole Form are becoming alternatives in the digitization of learning. Digitalization is flexible enough to be applied because it can adjust to the needs, being a means of achieving learning achievements.

Freddy Widya Ariesta, Jimmy Sapoetra

Bina Nusantara University

Abstract

The acceleration of the flow of information technology in the era of globalization requires all areas of life to formulate a vision, mission, goals, and strategies to suit today^s life and not to be out of date. The development of a variety of instructional media is in line with the rapid technological advances. The dynamic of today^s technology has achieved remarkable acceleration. In the digital era, teachers are required to plan and create learning in accordance with the needs of students as the native generation. Virtual Reality technology-based media is a form of Multimedia Learning process that can be viewed as the acquisition of information or as the construction of knowledge of students. The purpose of this study is to how the media characteristics and effectiveness of the Virtual Tour history museum are used as an innovative form of learning social studies in elementary school. The design of this study uses ex post facto correlation, which is a systematic empirical investigation in which the researcher does not control the variables and basically, they cannot be manipulated. The conclusion about the relationship between these variables is made based on the differences that accompany the independent variable and the dependent variable, without direct intervention. The study was conducted in three schools in the fifth-grade elementary school students in West Jakarta. More pervasive understanding of this occurs because Virtual Reality provides the user experience as a first-person or the circumstances in which the user as if it were in its natural environment, thereby creating the perception of the first. This condition is the strength of Virtual Reality as a media learning because users will have a complete experience. The learning process should be oriented in all aspects of the individual to develop all areas of development such as physical, emotional, social, and cognitive.
