Abstract

This study aims to understand the dynamics of the reflective model of the personal attribute dimensions of the concept of public leadership in a multicultural society in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0. This research is the second phase of a series of leadership research in Indonesia. Previous research using qualitative methods illustrates that there are two main dimensions of effective leadership for a multicultural society in dealing with horizontal conflicts in Indonesia, namely the dimensions of personal attributes and behavioral competencies. The dimensions of personal attributes include cognitive abilities, innate traits and, while the behavioral dimensions of competence include personal and interpersonal competencies. Data was collected online and obtained as many as 247 respondents from the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi areas. In the internal consistency of the measuring instrument used for each dimension 0.76 (cognitive ability), 0.844 (trait), and 0.88 (value). By analysis using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) it was found that the personal attribute model was significant with the GoF SRMR index (0.099), d_ULS (12.9191). the magnitude of the contribution of each dimension is 0.776 (cognitive ability), 0.701 (innate/traits), and 0.936 (value). Can unlock the dimensions of personal attributes that have a significant role because it shows the leadership potential of each individual that needs to be considered in the process of selecting prospective leaders and can then be used for the preparation of leadership training programs. This is important considering that there has been a rapid demographic change in Indonesia, especially in areas that are sources of economic growth, causing horizontal conflicts in various regions.

Hybrid Culture and Intercultural Competence in Indonesian EFL Textbooks: Policies and Pedagogical Implications
Jimmy Sapoetra

Primary Teacher Education Department, Faculty of Humanities, Bina Nusantara University, Jakarta, Indonesia 11480

Abstract

Hybrid Culture is a new term which reflects the diversity and complexity of the world culture existing today. The term hybrid culture refers to the mixture of several kinds of culture blended or integrated into one new culture which has the characteristics of the old and new culture it represents. In the context of EFL learning in Indonesia, many EFL textbooks do not really cover the hybridity of the culture which creates the pedagogical implications in the future of education. Majority of the textbooks either focus on the local or target culture. They do not emphasize the importance of the students to understand that culture is not single-handedly original in its nature but consists of many external factors. This study is trying to investigate such phenomena. The data were taken from 3 (three) local EFL textbooks used in some high schools in Indonesia. For the cultural content evaluation, Byram and Morgan (1994) and Kilickaya (2004) proposed a qualitative evaluation checklist with a list of criteria for examining the extent and methods of how culture is presented. There are nine categories from the checklist, namely- social identity and social groups, social interaction, belief and behavior, socio-political institutions, socialization and the life-cycle, national history, national geography, national cultural heritage, stereotypes and national identity (Byram & Morgan, 1994). Then the results were compared and it was proven that the textbooks do not represent the hybrid culture in their content.

Abstract

Learning Phrasal Verbs (PVs) is a challenge for EFL learners. It is not only because of the pattern but also the meaning. Although there are many online sources or webs providing PVs materials, there are few in application format. This paper is a need analysis-based study to figure out the problems faced by EFL learners in learning English PVs and reveal the needs of online platform applications to support them learning English PVs. A questionnaire was distributed to higher education students in Indonesia with 115 participants responded and become the respondents in the study. Qualitative data analysis was used to analyze the data by presenting the percentage of the responses. The result shows that there is a need to develop an online platform of the application to support learners^ understanding of PVs. There are two major considerations in developing the application. First is the application that should provide tools to make the application user-friendly and second is the content of the application that should contain practices in using PVs in sentences and paragraphs and exercises. These finding is required for the development of an application to support the EFL learners in understanding PVs for sentence and paragraph writing.

Abstract

The COVID 19 pandemic has changed the shapes and the faces of global education. With the need to maintain interaction, video conferencing apps have never played a more significant role to connect teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders at both national, binational, and global levels. For students pursuing an international learning experience, learning through conferencing app may offer an entirely new culture of learning and experience. This study explores the experience of an Indonesian student pursuing international education in a Japanese university to improve English and Japanese language proficiencies. It explores whether a cloud-based video conferencing application was able to support foreign language learning in a multilingual environment and the challenges that occurred during the first author^s study abroad experience. Adopting a translanguaging perspective, this study examines the interactions between teachers and students that included the orientation to and the use of multilingual practices in the English-Japanese dialogues for the purpose of language learning. Since autoethnography was used as a method for data collection, the sources of data came from personal journals, artifacts of assignments, and transcripts of interactions. It presents the author^s analytical and reflective notes on the experience in three major themes: (1) the challenges that occurred in the online translanguaging environment, (2) the translanguaging pedagogical application in the classes and (3) the interlocutors^ strategies in creating effective communication despite the challenges. With the recent movement on the internationalization of Indonesian higher education, this study contributes to the value of international experience in foreign language acquisition and offers insight for those who consider pursuing higher education experience, particularly in an Asian country like Japan.

This study examines the technological challenges that lecturers confront when teaching e-learning at the university and the working strategies used in e-learning classrooms. The data were gathered through an online poll of 100 university lecturers at a private university in West Jakarta. The responses were then evaluated numerically and qualitatively to determine the respondents^ perceptions of the difficulty of virtual learning activities using SPSS software. The findings show that the technical issues faced by lecturers can be separated into three categories: connectivity, teaching technology, and interactivity. To increase efficiency, they require using better internet connection, boosting engagement with a particular technology, and technical and pedagogical training.

Abstract

Data shows that student^s mental health is decreasing due to the effects of the pandemic, this is also occurring by students of DKV, Bina Nusantara University, Malang. The situation that forces students to be isolated is aggravated by the pressure of assignments that are higher than normal classes, having an impact on doing practical assignments, such as mask works with the theme of Nusantara culture. Students collect and process data, create illustrations, then create masks with various materials. Works that require high effort like this should be appreciated. But unfortunately in the era of the pandemic, appreciation in the form of conventional exhibitions is difficult to do, even though appreciation is needed in difficult conditions like today. There is a need for an appreciation room that is by the situation as well as responding to the challenges of the 4.0 era by utilizing technology, one of which is augmented reality. The technology, which is very relevant to be applied to the Visual Communication Design field, can be an alternative to building a virtual gallery. By utilizing social media Instagram, we can create a virtual gallery that provides a new experience. The purpose of this study is to create an Instagram account containing student work supported by AR applications. Visitors to the virtual gallery can enjoy a digital exhibition containing a design project of masks with the theme of Nusantara culture with a new experience. It is hoped that it will provide a stimulus for students to be passionate about work and improve the quality and quantity of work, especially in the era of the pandemic.
