Abstract
ABSTRACT
The application of the Know - Want - Learned (KWL) strategy is an effort to overcome the low of students motivation in learning basic English. The researcher applied this strategy, on the reason that this strategy has a basic principle actively involve the student in learning basic English by eliciting students knowledge they already have by means of mentioning what they know, and write down all the information is known about topics, what information they want to know and the information they know from the topic to be learned and discussed.
The Know - Want - Learned (KWL) strategy is able to give positive influence on students motivation, where teacher and students are actively involved and there is an educative interaction in learning process.
The aim of this research is to increase students motivation in learning Basic English through the application of the Know - Want - Learned (KWL) strategy at English Education Department in a first semester. This is Quasi - Experimental Research Design. In this design two groups were given pretest to find out early motivation of the students before giving treatment and posttest is given to find out the degree of motivation enhancement of the two groups. Data analysis is by means of t -test that is independent samples t - test and paired samples t - test.
The result of the analysis shows that KWL strategy is able to increase students motivation in learning basic English. It is shown by t - test that there is a significant difference between two groups. the experimental group shows higher motivation compared to the control group using the conventional method.
The conclusion is that KWL strategy is recommended to be applied in learning Basic English especially in this pandemic era.
