Abstract

One of the most prominent forms of social and political protest in the last several years has been the boycott of multinational corporations. The Starbucks boycott is unique among boycotts that have received international attention due to the profound impact it has had on a global scale and the seriousness of its repercussions. The labour practices, political stances, and environmental concerns are only a few of the many reasons behind the boycott. The public^s perspective and response to the boycott have been significantly influenced by the substantial media coverage of these issues. Despite its success, Starbucks has been the target of boycotts and public censure due to a number of scandals. These disagreements include a wide range of issues, including the company^s stance on various political subjects, claims of exploitative labour practices, and worries about environmental sustainability. Because of its outsized influence on how the general public views and reacts to the boycott, the media is crucial in bringing attention to these issues. Narratives, subject presentations, and public opinion are all susceptible to the whims of the media. Various audience segments^ interpretations and reactions to the media^s coverage of the Starbucks boycott can teach us a lot about how protest movements function in the modern day and how the media shapes public opinion. The interviews, observations, and literature reviews that make up this study^s qualitative research approach. Participant in-depth interviews and focus groups representing a range of demographics made comprised the qualitative component.

Abstract

Economic inclusion is a primary goal of Indonesia^s National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024, with a target to increase Sharia economic penetration from 11.2% to 15% by 2024. However, the penetration rate remains low at 12.5% in 2023, primarily due to misunderstandings and perceived exclusivity. Enhancing public understanding through technology is crucial. A Sharia-compliant cooperative management system, SIMAKSI, was developed to support this goal, but its growth is hindered by an unappealing structure, poorly organized information, and issues related to non-compliance. This study leverages SWOT analysis to determine the most effective strategies for improving the SIMAKSI web application. The analysis reveals strengths in user segmentation, Sharia compliance, and feature offerings, while identifying significant weaknesses in the system^s design and functionality. Additionally, PESTEL analysis highlights opportunities such as government support and market demand, and threats from competitive pressures and regulatory changes. Porter^s Five Forces framework further evaluates these competitive pressures. The results of this study offer strategic guidance for optimizing SIMAKSI, with the aim of increasing market acceptance and expanding its subscriber base, thereby contributing to the broader objective of Sharia economic inclusion in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study will examine the capacity of learning participation and socioeconomic conditions in reducing multidimensional poverty in the special region of Yogyakarta. Social, cultural, family background, and child welfare factors will determine the direction of the probability of falling into multidimensional poverty. Using data from the national socioeconomic survey (Susenas) and the Poisson regression method, this study will comprehensively analyze the relationship between the factors mentioned in the model and see whether multidimensional poverty can resist overdispersion. This study shows that the level of children^s learning participation, family background, and household welfare can reduce the incidence of households falling into multidimensional poverty. This research will empirically confirm the discrete economic model and provide policy recommendations for local governments to anticipate poverty through education support.

Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Yogyakarta

Abstract

Although the awareness of the importance of the role of SMEs in the country^s economic development is quite high, it is undeniable that the current management of SMEs is not optimal. This can be seen from the unestablished use of technology in business management. In fact, it is known that globalization requires all business sectors to use technology. Currently, some SMEs in Indonesia only focus on the traditional production and sales process of products. Departing from this phenomenon, an in-depth study related to the role of technology adoption in the sustainability of SMEs is considered necessary. This study tries to examine the impact of technology adoption explained by the TOE (technology-organization-environment) framework on its effect on business sustainability. The TOE (technology-organization-environment) framework was chosen because it is considered one of the theories that is able to explain the phenomenon well. It is hoped that the results of this study will be able to provide direction and an overview of the importance of using technology for business sustainability. Abstract

This article examines the participation of the local community in sustainable tourism development in Sleman Regency using a Human Rights (HR) approach. In the context of the issue, the rapid growth of tourism often neglects the rights and participation of the local community, necessitating a more inclusive and sustainable approach. This study aims to evaluate the level of community participation and identify factors that support or hinder their involvement.
The method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis. Theories of participation and HR are used as the analytical framework.
The findings indicate that local community participation still needs to improve, influenced by factors such as lack of information, low education levels, and external dominance. However, local initiatives show significant potential for sustainable tourism development if supported by appropriate policies.
In conclusion, a human rights approach can enhance community participation in sustainable tourism. The novelty of this research lies in integrating the HR perspective in analyzing community participation in tourism, providing new insights for more inclusive and equitable tourism policies.

THE RELEVANCE OF ESG PERFORMANCE TO TAX AVOIDANCE (EMPIRICAL STUDY OF MINING AND ENERGY COMPANIES LISTED ON THE INDONESIAN STOCK EXCHANGE)

Economic and Business, UPN ^Veteran Yogyakarta.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the impact of ESG performance on corporate tax avoidance among energy companies in Indonesia. Paying taxes in accordance with the law is an obligation that every economic entity has to fulfil. However, paying taxes increases cash outlays and companies are motivated to engage in tax avoidance behaviour. Based on the Statistical Review 2022, Indonesia ranks 24th as the world^s largest oil producing country with a total of 692 thousand barrels per day or 0.8% of the world^s oil production. However, the implementation of the oil and gas income tax (PPh Migas) in 2019 did not meet expectations. Even in 2020, tax revenues from the mining and quarrying sector fell dramatically. Much research has been done on ESG, but few studies have examined the impact of companies^ ESG performance on strategic decision-making. Tax avoidance not only leads to a loss of national tax revenues, but also undermines the effective allocation of tax resources. Investigating corporate tax avoidance behaviour can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the economic consequences of ESG.
