Supsiloani Supsiloani- Baiduri, Ratih- Amal, Bakhrul Khair- Hidayat- Puspitawati-Samosir, Sri Lestari

faculty of social sciences, Universitas Negeri Medan

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the challenges faced by the Islamic Center Foundation of North Sumatra in implementing multicultural education in the school environment. As an Islamic-based educational institution, this foundation has a strategic role in building awareness of the importance of tolerance, inclusivity, and appreciation of diversity in a multicultural society. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The results of the study indicate that the main challenges faced include resistance to values from some school residents, limited teacher understanding of the concept of multicultural education, lack of special training, and the perception of exclusivity of religious identity that hinders acceptance of cultural and belief diversity. In addition, limited policy support from external institutions also complicates the implementation process. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening the capacity of educators, developing a curriculum that is responsive to the multicultural context, and more progressive policy support to realize inclusive and harmonious education in religious-based schools.

Fostering Cultural Synergy to Address Stunting: Community Resilience in Urban-Rural Coastal Belawan Bahari

Abstract

This article discusses how the urban-rural coastal community in Belawan Bahari Village, Medan City, addresses stunting, viewed not merely as a medical issue but as the outcome of complex social, cultural, economic, ecological, and gender interactions. Conducted in response to persistently high stunting rates reflecting structural and ecological injustices, especially in coastal areas affected by tidal flooding, poverty, and social exclusion, this qualitative case study involved eight key informants-housewives, posyandu cadres, and community leaders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The analysis integrated perspectives from economic anthropology and environmental anthropology to explore how social capital-including mutual aid, family ties, and ecological adaptation-helps families cope amid limited resources. Bourdieu^s theories of habitus and capital were used to understand how socio-economic background and power relations within households, particularly male dominance, shape parenting practices, health behaviors, and decisions about child nutrition. The social determinants of health framework further highlighted how social and environmental contexts fundamentally affect child health outcomes. Findings show that the community developed collective coping strategies, such as leveraging informal networks, providing nutritious food assistance, and adapting to recurrent tidal flooding. These strategies emerged in an environment of chronic vulnerability, where most households survive on less than one million rupiah per month and rely on informal work as day laborers, scavengers, or part-time fishermen. Social capital manifested through a culture of mutual aid supports community resilience against ecological challenges and gaps in public services. However, disparities were observed in posyandu participation: while most informants attended regularly, some were reluctant or stopped altogether due to shame or lack of trust. This underscores that merely providing health services does not ensure equitable use, as cultural norms, perceived risks, and economic pressures all influence participation. Additionally, food aid distribution from government agencies, community groups, and CSR initiatives proved inconsistent, undermining the sustainability of these interventions. The study underscores the need for community-based, multisectoral interventions that are sensitive to social capital, spatial dynamics, gender relations, and local culture. The novelty of this research lies in combining anthropology, sociology, and geography to view stunting as a reflection of broader social and ecological injustices, while also illuminating the role of gender and household practices in shaping coping strategies. The study offers a conceptual model potentially applicable to other coastal communities facing similar challenges. Recommendations highlight the importance of policies rooted in social justice, gender equity, and women^s empowerment as key drivers of stunting prevention at the household and community levels. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of coastal public health and supports the design of more inclusive, culturally responsive stunting intervention programs.

Abstract

This applied research investigates the determinants of going concern audit opinions in Indonesian manufacturing companies, emphasizing the role of internal auditors^ perceptions of audit quality and its impact on client satisfaction. Recognizing the growing concern over audit failures and unqualified opinions issued prior to corporate insolvencies, this study addresses critical audit quality dimensions and evaluates the moderating effect of the going concern opinion.
A quantitative explanatory approach was adopted using a structured questionnaire distributed to internal auditors of manufacturing firms listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). A total of 120 questionnaires were sent, and 59 valid responses were analyzed. The study employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 4.0 to assess the relationships between latent constructs and to test the interaction effects. The main constructs evaluated include audit experience, industry knowledge, accounting standards proficiency, audit team independence, professional skepticism, audit field execution, and ethical standards. Client satisfaction serves as the dependent variable, with the going concern audit opinion as a moderator.
The results indicate that five dimensions-audit experience, industry knowledge, audit team independence, audit field execution, and ethical standards-exert a positive and statistically significant effect on audit quality (path coefficients > 0.30- p < 0.05). In turn, audit quality significantly influences client satisfaction (&#946- = 0.637, t = 9.822, p < 0.001), demonstrating the importance of perceived audit effectiveness. The moderating effect of the going concern opinion is also significant (&#946- = 0.214, t = 2.446, p = 0.015), indicating that transparent disclosures regarding going concern status enhance the perceived value of the audit and client trust.
These findings confirm that audit quality is multidimensional and context-dependent, with ethical behavior and auditor independence playing a central role in shaping audit outcomes. The study contributes to the development of audit quality theory in emerging markets and provides practical implications for audit practitioners, regulatory bodies, and corporate governance frameworks in strengthening transparency and early warning mechanisms within financial reporting practices.

Pendidikan Antropologi, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial, Universitas Negeri Medan

Abstract

This study aims to develop and validate a structured social engineering model that optimizes social capital as a catalyst for socio-economic development in rural areas. The lack of a systematic approach to empowering social capital is the main background. Grounded in the social capital theory of Putnam and Bourdieu, this research proposes social engineering as an intervention strategy to enhance social relations and community participation. A qualitative case study method was employed in Bukit Lawang Village, utilizing data collection through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and participant observation. Findings indicate a 35% increase in social network density and a 42% rise in community participation in mutual cooperation post-intervention. This model effectively strengthens collective capacity through key components such as network bridging and trust-building. Policy recommendations include institutionalizing social engineering units at the village level and integrating social capital indicators into RPJMDes evaluations.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an addiction counseling model for NAFZA (Narcotics, Psychotropics, and Other Addictive Substances) based on North Sumatra Provincial Regulation No. 1 of 2019 and Governor Regulation No. 19 of 2021. The model serves as an effective intervention for students who are victims of NAFZA abuse, in line with the regulations that prioritize rehabilitation over expulsion. However, most Guidance and Counseling (BK) teachers lack competence in addiction counseling and still use conventional methods. This research employs a qualitative developmental design involving BK teachers, principals, students, and parents. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and participatory observation. The research stages include needs analysis, model development, implementation, evaluation, and data analysis. This study is expected to produce an effective addiction counseling model and improve the competence of BK teachers.

Universitas Negeri Medan

Abstract

Abstract, the right to obtain food is a basic right for all people. Food independence is one of the important pillars in maintaining national stability, especially in an agricultural country like Indonesia. However, in recent decades, Indonesia has faced significant challenges related to food independence, one of which is dependence on food imports. Import policies implemented by the government have a direct impact on national food independence, especially in the context of availability, accessibility, and stability of food prices. The purpose of this study is to analyze the interdependence of the Food Security Index (IKP) and inflation on food imports and to analyze the effect of import instrument shocks and on the Food Security Index (IKP) in Indonesia. Research methods starting from conducting assumption tests and using VECM, then shock is carried out through Impulse Response and Variance Decompositions. The results of this study indicate an interdependence between the Food Security Index, Inflation, and Food Imports. Furthermore, a one-unit import shock causes an increase in the IKP until the fourth period, then decreases in the fifth period, and increases again in the sixth to tenth periods. Imports successfully increase the IKP indicator, albeit in relatively small amounts.

Abstract

In the digital era, the need for fast and easy access to information is constantly increasing. One way to address this need is by developing a Digital Dictionary. A bilingual digital dictionary has great potential to facilitate language learning and intercultural communication. In the healthcare sector, precise medical terminology is crucial for effective communication among medical professionals, patients, and other related parties. However, language differences often pose a barrier to the exchange of health information.
A Digital Bilingual Health Dictionary is one solution to overcome these obstacles. By leveraging information technology, a digital dictionary can provide quick and accurate access to translations of medical terms, thereby improving the quality of healthcare services and facilitating intercultural communication.
The objective of this research is to design and build an effective and efficient Digital Bilingual Health Dictionary. This digital dictionary is expected to help users better understand and use both languages. Furthermore, this research also aims to explore the potential of current technology in digital dictionary development.
This research utilizes the Research and Development (R&D) Method.
The vocabulary used for the dictionary consists of German and Indonesian, comprising 1100 mixed words, including nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The application used to design the digital dictionary is Dictionary App Builder.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need for gender-equality-based digital literacy development at the senior high school (SMA) level in Medan. Digital literacy is the ability to understand and use information from various digital sources, including the ability to access, evaluate, use, and create digital content effectively and responsibly. It also involves the ability to think critically in the digital world, as well as understanding the ethics and security of online interactions. Digital literacy is a crucial competency in facing the challenges of the 21st-century digital era. However, this literacy needs to be developed in an inclusive and gender-responsive manner to avoid creating new gaps in the use of information technology. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observations, and questionnaires distributed to teachers, students, and principals at several public and private high schools in Medan. The analysis results indicate that there are still inequalities in access, participation, and gender perceptions in the use of digital media in the school environment. Of the 300 respondents, 75% stated that there is still a lack of integration of gender equality values in the curriculum and a lack of training that supports fair digital literacy for all genders. Therefore, the development of digital literacy in high schools needs to be designed with attention to the principles of gender equality, both in teaching materials, learning methods, and school policies. These findings provide an important basis for the formulation of teacher training programs and education policies that are more inclusive and equitable.

Abstract

Women are narrated as those who are taking care of domestic matters, such as planting, watering, cultivating, and caring for children in the oral story of North Sumatra. The role of women in the domestic space is considered not a contribution to social or cultural development, but a duty or responsibility of women within the social and cultural structure. This is because the narration of women has become a view that is internalized and normalized by society so that it forms the structure of society^s life. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate in depth about how the oral story of North Sumatra that narrates women are structured and how the discourse is produced from the oral story. The study used purposive sampling techniques to select North Sumatra oral histories that corresponded to the purpose and findings to be achieved in the research. Then, to collect data, it was used a listening technique from the selected oral story of North Sumatra. Further, it was analyzed by using Albert B. Lord^s theory of structuralism to analyze the structure of oral stories and the constructive structural theory of Pierre Bourdieu to analyze the structure of society. The findings show that the social domination structure places women in the second class and men as power holders. Then, there is the narrative of women in domestic spaces and public spaces that presents stereotypes.

Abstract

The implementation of the ^Seven Habits of Great Indonesian Children^ song based on digital media in Medan certainly faces challenges and obstacles, both in terms of the availability of technological facilities and the readiness of teachers to use the song in early childhood learning. Based on field observations, not all early childhood education institutions in Medan have adequate access to technological devices and the internet. Furthermore, many early childhood education teachers still struggle to access information using the internet and other digital technologies. These limitations hinder the optimal use of digital media in learning. Some early childhood education institutions in Medan pay little attention to arts learning activities, including music. This results in a lack of creativity in children and a limited use of digital media in music teaching. The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation strategies of the ^Seven Habits of Great Indonesian Children^ song based on digital media, and its implications for positive character development in early childhood. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, using observation, interviews, and document study techniques.

Abstract

This study reveals the existence of Karo ethnomedicine by mapping the social arenas where healing experiences are constructed. This is a qualitative study conducted using an ethnographic approach within the context of the anthropology of place. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using ethnographic interview, domain, and taxonomic analysis techniques. The results show that palm wine (lapo tuak), houses, healing practice sites, and traditional markets are not merely physical locations, but function as social spaces that play a crucial role in the cultural ecology of healing. These spaces serve as a medium for the transmission of healing knowledge from generation to generation, a place for sharing experiences of illness and recovery, and healing narratives among individuals and communities, as well as a place for fulfilling the material needs of healing potions and other equipment. The existence of these social spaces forms a dynamic and contextual topography of healing culture within Karo society.
