Abstract

This study aims to examine the various forms of metaphor found in anding-andingen (proverbs) of the Karo ethnic group. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through literature review using reading and note-taking techniques. The primary data source was the book 1000 Perumpamaan Karo (A Thousand Karo Proverbs) written by M. Singarimbun and published in 1960. Data analysis was conducted through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal four dominant categories of metaphor in Karo anding-andingen: anthropomorphic metaphors, animal metaphors, abstraction metaphors, and synesthetic metaphors. Among these, abstraction and synesthetic metaphors were the most frequently occurring. These findings suggest that anding-andingen function not only as figurative expressions but also as reflections of cultural values, cognitive patterns, and local wisdom embedded in Karo society.
