Abstract

Phosphate glass is a material with unique properties that make it an ideal candidate for optical and photonic applications, including in luminescence devices and sensors. However, the development of this material is still constrained by the need for expensive imported raw materials and the lack of exploitation of local resources. This research aims to investigate the influence of the use of quartz sand (QS) on the physical, structural, and optical properties of phosphate glass media doped with Dysprosium (Dy3+) ions. The glass material to be synthesized involves two main compositions: (i) 64,5P2O5-15CaO-10BaO-10Gd2O3-0,5Dy2O3 (without quartz sand) and (ii) 15QS-49,5P2O5-15CaO-10BaO-10Gd2O3-0,5Dy2O3 (with quartz sand). The quartz sand used comes from Huta Ginjang, North Sumatra Province, which is rich in silica (SiO2) content. The research stage includes the synthesis of glass material by melting-quenching technique, continued with a cutting and refining process to obtain optimal size and transparency.
