Abstract

On November 20, 2023, the Indonesian language was officially recognized as an official language at the UNESCO General Assembly. Indonesian became one of the ten official languages used in the assembly. This achievement by the Indonesian government is a mandate from Law No. 24 of 2009 on the National Flag, Language, Coat of Arms, and National Anthem, particularly Article 44, Paragraph (1). This recognition enhances Indonesia^s global image as a nation that supports cultural diversity and is committed to promoting these values on a global scale. However, in Australia, the study of Indonesian as a foreign language (BIPA) has experienced a decline over the past two decades. To revive interest in learning Indonesian, the Faculty of Language and Arts at the State University of Jakarta (FBS-UNJ), through its Master^s Program in Indonesian Language Education, introduced Indonesian folklore through animated videos to students at two schools, Trinity Christian School and Burgmann Anglican School, in February 2024. The evaluation results from both schools indicated that teaching BIPA through animated folklore videos was an effective means of promoting the Indonesian language and culture. Both schools expressed hope that similar programs could be continued and expanded to include internships and collaborative research initiatives.
