Abstract
Abstract
Teaching Bahasa Indonesia to the Mandarin-speaking Taiwanese students at the A1 level presents both opportunities and challenges regarding the use of English. In the present study, the research investigates how English is used in BIPA classes and what the consequences of such usage are for learning outcomes by students from a Mandarin background. Although the number of studies dealing with language acquisition and teaching methodologies has been constantly growing, scarce attention has been paid so far to the precise role that English plays within this context. The aims of this study are to explore the extent and nature of the use of English in BIPA classes, its impact on students^ understanding and their performance in the language, and to collect student feedback regarding such an approach. This qualitative research is a case study conducted with 20 Taiwanese students- data were obtained from classroom observations, interviews of the students and instructors, and the examination of instructional materials. It was determined that English often serves to explain complex aspects of Bahasa Indonesia, which helps students understand but sometimes leads to reliance on English instead of direct interaction with Indonesian. Students indicated that while this English support is helpful in initial comprehension, it subsequently makes them less confident in using Indonesian independently. From these findings, strategic and limited use of English by teachers, direct Indonesian practice within lessons, and resource preparation that balances bilingual support with direct language contact have been recommended. The results of this approach would be to ensure improvement in comprehension as well as in language acquisition with reduced reliance on English.
