Digital Connectedness to Enhance Marital Satisfaction in Madurese Migrant Couples

Abstract

Couples marital satisfaction has an important role in the family life. However, for Madurese migrant couples who are in separate relationships, it becomes a challenge and a strong effort to enhance their marital satisfaction. This study aims to explain how Madurese migrant couples can enhance marital satisfaction during a long-distance marriage. This study uses qualitative research which involving 17 research participants. Data collection uses in-depth interviews through the snowball sampling technique. Data analysis uses Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis developed by Jonathan Smith and the credibility of the research results is checked using the member check technique. The results of the study show that digital connectedness is an effort made by Madurese migrant couples to maintain and enhance marital satisfaction during a long-distance marriage. Other findings also show that openness, conflict management, and finance are also other efforts implemented in this process. However, all research participants agreed that digital connectedness is the most effective strategy in improving their marital satisfaction, including in realizing some of these other efforts. This study is expected to be useful for migrant couples in improving their marital satisfaction during a long-distance marriage.
