Adaptive Re-use Architecture and Design Analysis as Sustainable Design Approach. Case Study: The Hermitage Hotel, Jakarta.

Abstract

The Hermitage Hotel is a Colonial Style building purposed as a hotel in Menteng, Center of Jakarta. The building was build in 1923, since the colonialization era in Indonesia by the Dutch and used as many purposed such as Communication center, University and finally in 2017, as The Hermitage Hotel, The Tribute Portfolio Hotel run by The Marriot. Different functions in the same building knows as Adaptive re-use method, and can be applied to the old building as one of the solutions as the conservation that has social, culture and historical value. Another advantage of applying this method is to enhance the building value in economic, environmental, cultural and sustainability aspects. The purpose of this article is to analyze the adaptive re-use method used in The Hermitage, Tribute portfolio hotel which is a Conservation building type B and C. Moreover, qualitative method is used by the author and collection data by doing observation and interview, done in the year of 2023 with the interior designer of the Hermitage from PAI Design and the expert of Conservation buildings. The result of the research proves that by applying adaptive reuse method in an old building is a solution to maintain the historical, social and culture value. In conclusion, adaptive reuse method could be a option for an old building to be re-purposed with certain renovations. There are some limitations on the application due to the type B of the conservation building, However, the interior designer and architect applied the adaptive re-use well on the building, maintaining the aesthetic and function aspects.
