Abstract
The main objective of this study is to describe the collective memory of the Luang people regarding the current state of the Luang language. Language shifts particularly those that occur at the word level, and the variables that affect these changes.
This study employed a descriptive methodology, with the primary focus being the use of language in the context of livelihood. Three sub-focuses were identified: (a) words associated with fishing gear- (b) traditional sea transportation technologies- and (c) names of fish found along the coast. In this study, participant observation and unstructured interviews were used as the data gathering methods. The data sources included elderly individuals who are still proficient in the language for comparison, as well as youngsters, ages 15 to 16, who were born and reared on Luang Island.
According to Ranjit Kumar, content analysis was used to analyse the data in this study. This analysis begins with data collection, followed by data coding according to the topic under investigation, and lastly arriving at a conclusion as an answer to the questions posed. This approach can aid in the exploration of a community^s culture, history, and growth across time.
The study^s findings indicate that: (1) Luang language is still present in the collective memory of the Luang community as a self-identity- (2) Luang language is shifting lexically- and (3) changes in the Luang community^s focus on their livelihoods and environmental behavior contribute to changes in the language^s lexical characteristics.
In order to preserve the Luang language as a local legacy that may encourage pride in its cultural history, efforts are made based on the study^s early detection of language shifting findings.
