Abstract
Literary works have an important contribution in building national character. Literature covers a wide area of human life which essentially touches on issues of divinity and humanity which include humanity, honesty, hypocrisy, courage, justice, nobility, but also ambition, envy, guilt, and love. The aim of this research is to describe (1) the dimensions of religiosity and humanity. The natural destination of modern Indonesian literature- (2) the urgency of the religiosity and humanity dimensions of literature in character development. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods with inductive logic. Research data consists of words, expressions, sentences and discourse in modern Indonesian literature which contain dimensions of religiosity and humanity. The data source is a number of modern Indonesian literary works selected by purposive sampling. Data was collected using library techniques. Data analysis was carried out using the semiotic model reading method including heuristic and hermeneutic reading. The results of this research are: (1) the manifestation of dimensions of religiosity and humanity in modern Indonesian literature, including religiosity, humanity and social sensitivity, willingness to accept wrongdoers, the importance of life^s struggle, morals in art, the importance of morals in life, and willingness to accept difference- (2) the religiosity and humanity dimensions of literature have an important contribution in building national character.
