Abstract
Selfmedication is a double-edged sword which is appreciated by the World Health Organization (WHO) since it can reduce the unnecessary pressure on the world health care system. However, selfmedication can lead to severe consequences if utilized inappropriately. This study aimed to determine the knowledge and practice of traditional medicine selfmedication in Semarang Methods: This cross sectional questionnaire based study included 100 subjects who buy traditional medicine in Pharmacy X in Semarang on July 2023. The data were analyzed with Spearman correlation using SPSS software (version 23). Results: Based on the findings, 53% of the subjects were men and got a bachelor degree (60%). Their age were 34,78 years .Advertising was the most source (80%) from which they know about traditional medicine. The most used branded traditional medicine were Tolak Angin and Antangin, 46% and 20% sequentially. The selection of these product was in accordance with the intended used, to restore health (42%) and to treat minor illnesses (40%). Out of the total 100 participants, 75% declared that they dont feel the side effects of traditional medicines. The main reasons for selfmedication of traditional medicine was their believed of its potency (45%), but if the symptom still remain, they would use the chemical medicine (30%). Their knowledge point is enough, good and less (47%, 39% and 14% respectively). Moreover, there was a correlation between gender and the knowledge (P=0.019) and their age with their purpose of using traditional medicine (P= 0,047) also their income with their purpose (0,016)
