Question from Prof. Dr. I Wayan Rai S.

The Dondai people of Papua consider the mermaid motif as part of their culture
because it is inseparable from the genealogy of the cultural traditions of the
Sentani, Yakonde, and Sosiri tribes. The Sentani, Yakonde, and Sosiri people are the
ones who often help them in preserving their culture through tribal wars. In their
culture, they believe in the myth of mermaids. The mermaid motif is one of the
motifs acculturated by the Dondai people into their culture as a form of
reciprocation.
