Abstract

The trend of aromatherapy is quite on the rise these days. Many go out of their way in order to please their olfactory senses. However, the attention of the olfactory senses in interior design is quite scarce, a field commonly associated with the visual senses. Yet, we cannot deny the fact that the ideal state of a successful interior design is when it tickles all the senses- auditory, visual, and in this case, olfactory.
While people have long embellish their rooms and houses with good-smelling aromas, attribute themselves with fragrances (which seems to be small-scale)- we rarely see that happening in a large-scale designs, such as airports.
The question remains: can we change a whole perspective towards a large environment solely by twitching the scent?
This leads us to another query, if aromatherapy and scents are often culturally-infused. We can represent a culture through scents and aromatherapy
By displaying the fragrance often associated with the place and the culture of the place, one can subconsciously make associations between the scents their smelling and memories of a place and its culture. This can be one efficient way in which interior design represents a culture.
