Research on Characters Design of Tapel Saga, a Video Game based on Malangan Mask Novida Nur Miftakhul Arif, Jurike Moniaga, Sasmoko, Yasinta Indrianti

Abstract
Character design becomes an important part in video game that requires understanding of design and the comprehension of inspiration sources, especially to promote traditional cultures. Many people are aware to mining Indonesian traditional culture resources but it is still rarely presented properly. One of them is Malangan mask, one of the cultural treasures from East Java. Malangan mask is integrated with Panji Tales, the original traditional Indonesian literature and it has aesthetic elements, moral values and esoteric aspects but it starts to be forgotten. Tapel Saga mobile game tries to interpret the esoteric aspects of Malangan mask and actualize the local mythology and urban legend into modern format but still convey its aesthetic and moral value. The transformation of Indonesian traditional culture into video games requires the comprehension of the values, and it can be represented in symbols and attributes in the character design while paying attention to the principles of character design and market taste. Furthermore, the development of the video game characters on Tapel Saga is not only the promotion and innovation of the Indonesian traditional cultures, but also broadening of ideas for the development of Indonesian video game industry which has significant growth.
