A Slang Language Analysis Study on English Language Development in First Person Online Shooting Game Valorant

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the use of slang words in the online first person-shooting game Valorant. In specific, this present research aims to analyze the type of slang words that are used in the Valorant game and to identify the most used category of slang in the Valorant game. This research uses a qualitative method using the data taken from players when communicating dur-ing the battle. The data was taken in a period of a month in 2021. Data was analyze using the screen-shot of the chat feature in the Valorant game. The data analysis of this particular research uses Allan and Burridge^s (2006) theory of slang categories to analyze the data. The results show that- (1) there are four categories of slang words used by Valorant players, (2) there are two mostly used categories of slang words- acronym category and clipping category. In conclusion finding of this research give insight that slang words show language development. Implication for further studies discuss in this paper.
