Abstract

More than 95% of postpartum mothers want to postpone their next pregnancy or do not want to get pregnant again, but they do not use contraception so that there is an unintended pregnancy that ends in a risky pregnancy or unsafe abortion. Counseling about family planning during the postpartum period can meet the needs of maternal contraception. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of family planning counseling using audiovisual media on the use of IUD contraception in postpartum mothers. Method: The research design applied Randomized Controlled Trial. Subjects were selected using consecutive sampling with a total sample of 32 people in each group (control and intervention). Data analysis was carried out with bivariate analysis using a non-parametric test because the data were not normally distributed with a significance level of p value <0.05, and the multivariate analysis used logistic regression. Results: The proportion of IUD contraceptive use in postpartum mothers in the intervention group was 17 (53.1%), and in the control group it reached 8 (25%). Counseling using audiovisual media in postpartum mothers had a significant effect on IUD contraceptive use (p <0.05) and OR 3.40 (95% CI 1.18-9.80). The outside variable that influenced the use of IUD contraception in postpartum mothers was the role of the husband. Conclusion: Family planning counseling using audiovisual media was effective in influencing IUD contraceptive use in postpartum mothers.
