Abstract
The use of Indonesian language in the Foreign Language Study Program class is an effort to help student more understanding and mastering the Japanese language. However, this is considered as something that disturbs the students^ comprehension of Japanese language. Therefore, this research was conducted to understand how students^ perceptions and lecturers respond to those cases. This research was an observational explanator. A total of 58 respondents were randomly selected from the student of Japanese Language Education Major, Department of Foreign Language and Literature, Universitas Negeri Semarang. The results show that the use of Indonesian language in the Japanese class is classified as very high. This is shown by the majority of students often use Indonesian language during the learning process. The application of Indonesian in Japanese class is something that cannot be avoided. Indonesian language was made the learning process more effective, and a way to help explain Japanese vocabulary and sentence structures to students. Indonesian language encourages students to learn Japanese because they are still unable to construct and convey ideas using the target language. But Indonesian language also been an obstacle for students in developing language skills. This was probably because students depended on Indonesian language as their daily conversation, and difficult to explain a topic in foreign language.
