Abstract

Retail thrift shops occupy a unique space in the local economy bridging affordability, sustainability, and community livelihood. Yet, like many small enterprises, they are constantly tested by shifting consumer preferences, rapid technological change, economic volatility, and environmental pressures. These challenges often translate into profitability struggles and, for some, eventual closure. This study explored how thrift shop owners utilize management accounting practices to navigate both internal and external forces that shape their operations. Employing a quantitative-descriptive approach, data were gathered from 29 thrift shop owners in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan, Philippines and analyzed using frequency counts and weighted averages. Results revealed that while management accounting techniques such as cost management, inventory management, and cash and budget control are practiced, their application remains at a moderate level. External pressures, including inflation, societal trends, and intensified market competition, continue to weigh heavily on profitability. The findings emphasize that survival in the thrift retail sector cannot rely on tradition alone- it demands a more deliberate integration of accounting practices with strategic foresight and adaptive innovation. Strengthening financial management, enhancing record-keeping, and aligning operations with broader sustainability practices are critical pathways to resilience. This study recommends the development of structured support mechanisms through academic institutions, local governments, and business associations that can help thrift shops maximize efficiency, reduce vulnerability, and sustain their contribution to local economic vitality
