Measuring the Potential of Kyai to Enhance Halal Certification Awareness in Madura 1. Fakultas Keislaman Universitas Trunojoyo Madura Abstract This study examines the strategic potential of Kyai (Islamic religious leaders) in improving halal literacy and promoting awareness of halal certification among the Madurese community. Using qualitative methodology, data was obtained through in-depth interviews and literature analysis to reveal the key role of Kyai in shaping religious practices and public understanding of halal standards. Findings indicate that Kyai hold significant socio-cultural authority in Madura, ranking first among the four most influential community figures-alongside fathers (Bhuppa^), mothers (Bhapphu^), and government leaders (Ratoh). Their central position in Maduran life enables them to act not only as moral and religious guides but also as trusted agents of behavioural change. Three main dimensions underpin their influence: first, the position of Kyai as the primary reference in resolving various life issues- second, their frequent and sustained interaction with the community through regular sermons and religious gatherings- and third, the consistent integration of halal issues into their religious teachings. Due to the position, role, and consistency of Kyai in strengthening Islamic teachings, they have significant potential to enhance public awareness of halal. This study provides valuable insights for developing culturally rooted policy interventions aimed at strengthening halal literacy and engagement in halal certification, particularly in socio-religious contexts such as Madura.
