Utilization of Palm Oil Waste as a Growth Medium for Maggot (Black Soldier Fly) Cultivation

Abstract

This study investigates the use of palm oil waste, specifically Palm Kernel Meal (PKM) and decantercake, as growth media for cultivating Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, commonly known as maggots. Conducted at the Biomagg workshop in Cimanggis, Depok, the research evaluates the efficacy of PKM and decantercake compared to traditional chicken feed. Additionally, banana waste, including banana stems, corn cobs, and reject bananas, were explored as alternative growth media. Results demonstrated that PKM, particularly in a 5 kg concentration, provided an optimal medium for maggot growth. The study contributes to waste valorization strategies in palm oil production and promotes sustainable waste management practices. PKM was found to be an effective and sustainable medium for BSF larvae cultivation, with decantercake serving a supportive role by retaining moisture. The findings suggest that repurposing palm oil waste for maggot cultivation could reduce waste management costs and improve sustainable agriculture practices.
