Abstract

Mathematical concepts are understood through reasoning, and reasoning is comprehended and honed through learning mathematical content. The ability to reason is crucial when solving problems that impact an individual^s cognitive maturity in making logical decisions. However, students^ mathematical reasoning abilities are still considered weak due to the lack of innovative teaching methods. The aim of this research is to analyze and examine the improvement of students mathematical reasoning abilities. The research design is a quasi-experiment with pretest and posttest groups receiving instruction through a problem-posing approach. The instrument consists of a mathematics reasoning test with five essay questions. Students mathematical reasoning abilities, instructed with the problem-posing approach, fall into the moderate category. The average scores before and after treatment are pretest = 5.53 and posttest = 15.56, indicating an improvement of 41.79%. This research has implications in the field of Education by contributing to academic understanding and providing empirical groundwork for enhancing the quality of mathematics instruction. The problem-posing method can be considered an innovative approach to the learning, supported by research results demonstrating its effectiveness in improving students mathematical reasoning abilities.
