Abstract

Zinc substituted Barium-Strontium-hexaferrite (Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe10-xZnxMnTiO19, with x = 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5) nanoparticles have been successfully manufactured by solid-state reaction method using a high energy ball mill (HEBM). An X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterized phase formation and surface morphology. Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe10-xZnxMnTiO19 nanoparticles, with x = 0.1- 0.3- and 0.5, each was mixed with paint with a weight ratio of 1:3. Each mixture was then stirred until homogeneous. The hexaferrite paint composite was sprayed onto the metal plate, then dried in air. The ability to absorb microwaves is expressed by the value of reflection loss (RL) in the frequency range 8-12 GHz (X-band), characterized using a vector network analyzer (VNA). The results obtained, Ba0.6Sr0.4Fe10-xZnxMnTiO19 nanoparticles (x = 0.1- 0.3- and 0.5) were in phase with a hexagonal crystal structure and the average particle size was 200 nm. This substitution shows that the greater the concentration of Zinc substitution, the smaller the absorption percentage. The ability of the hexaferrite paint composite sample to absorb electromagnetic waves obtained reached 94.5% at a frequency of 8.46 GHz for the sample x = 0.1 with 290 micron paint thickness.
