EFFECTIVENESS OF ARECA (Areca Catechu) SEED EXTRACT CONCENTRATION AS A GREEN INHIBITOR AND IMMERSION TIME ON STEEL CORROSION CONTROL

Abstract

Corrosion is a process of metal degradation due to redox reactions between metals and various substances in their environment that produce unwanted compounds or often called rust. Areca nut extracts contain fairly high tannin compounds. These compounds are used as a green inhibitor because they can reduce the metal corrosion rate. The aims of this study are to find out the effect of increasing of inhibitor concentration on the corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency, and to find out the effect of the immersion time of steel on the corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency. The methods used in this study consisted of four stages, namely steel plate preparation, inhibitor solution making, steel immersion with inhibitor solution and inhibitor analysis of areca nut. The process of making an inhibitor solution from areca nut with a concentration of 0- 0.5- 1- 1.5- 2- and 2.5 g/L used hydrochloric acid solutions of 0.1 N as corrosion media and with a immersion time of 6 hours, 12 hours, 18 hours, and 24 hours. The optimum result obtained for the variation in inhibitor concentration was at 2.5 g/L with the lowest corrosion rate value of 0.5133 mpy and its highest efficiency value of 97.61%. The optimum result for the variation in immersion time was obtained at 24 hours.
