Production of Biodiesel from Used Cooking Oil with Zeolite Supported CaO Catalyst: Effect of Catalyst Mass and Transesterification Reaction Time

Abstract

Used cooking oil as a waste has the potential to be used as biodiesel feedstock. Making biodiesel with a homogeneous base catalyst requires a complicated separation process and can lead to a saponification reaction. Heterogeneous base catalysts can be used to overcome the shortcomings of homogeneous base catalysts where the separation process is simpler, namely by filtration, and the esterification and transesterification processes can be carried out in one process because CaO/ZAA can be used as an acid and base catalyst in both processes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding CaO/ZAA catalyst and transesterification time in obtaining high concentrations and yields. The results showed that the highest concentration of methyl ester was obtained by adding a 4% catalyst with a transesterification time of 1 hour, which was 0.503566% and the highest yield was obtained by adding a 4% catalyst with a transesterification time of 1 hour, which was 73.57%.
