Abstract

Abstract
Purpose: The study aims to synthesize and conceptualize the benefits of gamification in
tourism industry, through a systematic literature review (SLR) and finding the critical issues in
gamification in the tourism sector.
Design/methodology/approach: The research is based on a systematic literature review and
focusing on relevant literatures on gamification in tourism industry. The authors analyze 24
papers published between 2013 and 2021.
Findings: Contribution of this study is evaluating the ultimate purpose of gamification and
the benefit of gamification to support sustainability of smart tourism destination. There
are 2 ultimate purposes of gamification, namely to profitably create, deliver, and share
happiness and to entertainingly and effectively engage, acquire and retain more tourists.
The 4 key benefits of gamification in tourism found, there are Spiritual Happiness (SH),
Emotional Happiness (EH), Intellectual Happiness (IH), and Physical Happiness (PH).
Another important contribution is the identification of critical issues in gamification which
support successful smart tourism destination, there are 3 critical issues, namely (1)
Game Mechanism (features), (2) Tourist/User Position Level, (3) Tourist/User Motivational
Factors.
Originality/value: The study provides the SLR investigating the key benefits and critical issues of
gamification of sustainability smart tourism destination (SSTD). The findings present potential
implications and relevant insights for SSTD contributing to the construction of a more holistic
understanding of gamification in sustainability tourism.
