Abstract

This study aims to explore in depth the phenomenon of politeness strategy in undergraduate research supervision of the English Language Education study program, FKIP University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang. This research design is qualitative with phenomenological method. The data in this study were obtained through recorded conversations between students and lecturers, as well as semi-structured interviews with 29 students from different cultural backgrounds. The results showed that there were 18 forms of student politeness, namely the form of offers, rejection, acceptance, approval, questions, orders, attention, explanations, praise, opinions, requests, regrets, affirmations, apologies, thanks, suggestions, promises, glorifies God. Furthermore, the politeness phenomenon that occurs in student speech is motivated by several factors. First, different cultures and environments. Second, the structure of the different languages. Third, their understanding of the situation and context of the language.
