Examining ESP students^ needs: a recommendation for syllabus design in Indonesian vocational secondary school context

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study examines the students^ English for Specific Purposes (ESP) needs as a reflection and recommendation for syllabus designing in the context of vocational secondary school. Both English teachers and students from hospitality program were mainly become research collaborators which involved in learners^ specific needs investigation and later as recommendation of determining ESP classroom instruction. It focuses specifically on how the students of hospitality program perceive their English needs?- and the extent to which the current syllabus adequate to students^ target needs?. The findings shed lights on students^ perception of what priority language skills they need to be acquired in classroom and how their expectations regarding language teaching are. They both contribute to the fundamental basis for reorganizing syllabus. Further ethnographic research is needed to investigate the importance of accommodating students^ immediate needs as a language learner and their long-term professional goals in hospitality services as a mandatory option.
