The Use of a Language Learning App for Vocabulary Building

Abstract

This research examines the effectiveness of using a language learning application in the sense of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for vocabulary building. A quasi-experimental design was employed in this study. While the use of technology in the classroom was controversial in the rural context where this study was conducted, it promoted activities that could go beyond the limits of the classroom and that were part of the lives and social realities of students. The study was conducted in a private vocational high school in Kuningan. This research included 2 classes (control and experimental groups) consisting of 35 students from each class. The data were collected through pretest, postest and some sessions using a language learning apps named Duolingo. In the end, proof of how technology and classroom practices can be given was possible. Furthermore, the statisical analysis revealed that tcount is higher than ttable (4.27>1.67) meaning that a language learning app named Duolingo is effective in improving students^ vocabulary mastery.
