Assessing Online Learning Students^ Speaking Ability Using Impromptu Speech through Videoconference Mode

Abstract

The research focused on the use of impromptu speech to asses the students^ ability in speaking English. It was aimed to find out whether impromptu speech was suitable for English speaking assessment, especially for Online Learning students in higher education and to reveal students^ opinion toward impromptu speech for the speaking assessment through videoconference. There were 64 online learning students at Bina Nusantara University, Indonesia as the participants of the research. An online questionnaire consisted of closed and open questions was distributed to participants after they had taken the speaking assessment. The results indicate that the general information to the students before the assessment, the impromptu speech for assessment, and the videoconference for the assessment show positive responses, and there are obstacles during the assessment. Participants^ free opinion about the type of test are mostly positive. Therefore, this type and mode of assessment is suitable for speaking assessment for Online Learning students.
