Revealing Writers-Readers Interactions in Academic Genre: The Case of Computer Science Research Abstracts

Abstract

Abstracts have been identified as an important genre in academic writing. Good abstracts would be able to attract readers^ attention. This study investigated the language used in abstracts to interacting with the readers. Data for this study was a corpus of 970 research articles published by reputable journals in Computer Science between the years of 2017-2020. AntConc 3.5.9 was used as the tool to generate information on wordlist, collocations, and concordance plot. Results showed the use of interactive and interactional metadiscourse in Computer Science research article abstracts. Variations of interactional metadiscourse markers were also identified in abstracts in Computer Science. Future implications included providing knowledge on the varieties between native and non-native writers or English whilst applying the knowledge to writers^ preference.
