Online Media Usage for Long Distance Marriage Couple through Computer Mediated Communication

Abstract

Communication in this study is based on a form of communication between husband and wife experiencing and living a Long Distance Marriage (LDM). LDM has the challenges of time, space, and few physical encounters. So, the purposes in this study are to research the level of satisfaction that these couples experience, to explore the perspectives of individuals possessed in experiencing long distance marriage, and utilize of instant communication access through technology in conducting communication activities, conflict resolution, as well as to strengthen and maintain their commitment even they are in distance. This study used theory of relationship pattern, computer mediated communication, commuter marriage, and online media. This study consisted of three couples between the ages of 30-32 who were currently in LDM. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with a case study approach through three married couples on PT CPI employees and do the in depth interview. The analysis of the study compares and relates the relationship experience of the different participants and provides an adequate answer to the research questions of the study. It is discovered that LDM
partners maintain their relationship with constant communication via online media, such as phone call, video call and chatting in WhatsApp, which makes them feel more connected to their partners and experience similar feeling as if they were face to face. The relationship cultivated online is based on more trust, time, communication, effort and understanding. Secondly, it is found that couples use video chatting more often than cell phone to create more intimacy, closeness and solve the problems between them in their relationships.
