REVIEW OF PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF RAMBUTAN FRUIT PEEL EXTRACTS

Abstract

Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is native plant to Southeast Asia. Rambutan has been used from generation to generation, for food and for medicinal purposes. Rambutan fruit peels also had many functions in traditional medicine, Rambutan fruit peel has several compounds such as geraniin, corilagin, routine, ellagic acid and quercetin. Geraniin is reported to reduce viral infectivity and inhibit DENV-2 from adhering to cells and most likely attaching to protein E (envelope). Some of the pharmacological activities of rambutan fruit peel that had been reported were antioxidant, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-hypercholesterolemic, anti-hyperuricemia, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anticancer, and antiviral activity against the dengue virus.
