Maternal demographic characteristics and psychological well-being among Indonesian pregnant women

Abstract

Background: Pregnancy is one of stressful event during women life span. Psychological problems are frequent and common as well during pregnancy. Previous studies found psychological health problem can affect mother and fetus well being. Although many studies examined psychological well being, there is few studies focused among pregnant women. The present study aims to examine the relationship of maternal demographic characteristics and psychological well being among pregnant women in Indonesia. Methods: This was a cross sectional study with convenience samples, 93 participants were recruited in public hospital, West Java. Data were collected using two instruments to measure demographic characteristics and Indonesian well being scale (IWS). Data were analysed with descriptive statistic and Pearson correlation or Chi-square test. Results: The mean age was 27.9 years old (SD=6.83), 68.8% participants were unemployed and 56% had low education. The majority of participants had more than 3 times ANC visited, most of participants in third trimester with mean age of pregnancy 38.47 weeks (SD=3.93), and mean number of pregnancy was 2.09 (SD=1.29). The results confirms psychological well being categorised in high level was 89.22 (SD=6.77), the highest score dimension of psychological well being was spiritual, and the lowest score was basic need/material 12.78 (SD=3.84). Findings in this study shows number of pregnancy, employment, education level, number of ANC visited were significant with psychological well being. Conclusion: The study suggests health care provider to evaluate about psychological well being among pregnant women and to promote the important of ANC during pregnancy, so pregnant women could aware about their condition
