Improving Computer Programming Competency for First Semester Computer Science Students through Immersive Project Based Learning a) Primary Teacher Education Department, Faculty of Humanities, Bina Nusantara University, West Jakarta, Jakarta, 11480 Indonesia Abstract This research was aimed to describe the implementation of Project-based learning (PBL) in improving the computer programming competency in a higher education setting. The research method that applied in this research is action research with one cycle framework, encompass the reflection, planning, action, observing, and reflection phases. One thing that is explained in this research and not explored in other PBL research, is this research explains the application of PBL starting from the course design, preparation, implementation, until the evaluation phase. In the course design phase, the focus was on designing the Introduction to Programming course that supports the intended outcomes. Preparation phase focus on preparing the lecturer on PBL and preparing all media and instruments to support PBL. In the implementation phase focus was on how PBL was to be implemented in a student-centered learning environment. The evaluation phase focused on how to ensure the effectiveness of PBL and generate necessarily follow-up action to enhance the learning result. The learning model was implemented in the Introduction to Programming Course, Computer Science Program, Faculty of Computing and Media, Bina Nusantara International University. The result shows that PBL is not only effective in improving computer programming competency, but also in increasing the student^s engagement and the passion on lifelong learning.
